Pongal Celebrations Pongal festival was celebrated on 14th January as “NAMMA GRAMIYA THIRUVIZHA 2023 at Shri. B S Mootha Girls Sr Sec School. Students donning traditional attire, were called to enjoy and take part by witnessing a wide variety of programmes specially curated to suit the traditional décor of the day. The Grammiya Pongal thiruvizha celebration at SBSM was held in the presence of Secretary Mr.Vijay Kothari, Correspondent Mr.Kishan Srisrimal Jain and the Principal Mrs. Swarnalatha Gopalakrishnan, the faculty and students. The day dazzled with the decorations based on the cultural richness of traditional south and the overwhelming performances exhibited by the professional performers. Programmes like Karakattam, Kavadi Attam, Naiyandi Melam, Puliyattam, Thappaatam, Poikkaal Kuthirai, Maadu Attam, Mayil Attam, Kattai Kal Attam were performed by artists from the villages, drawing energetic encores from the audience. Students participated in events like pot painting, rangoli and Hatue Couture -traditional dress of Tamil Nadu and bagged cash awards. In the Junior Category (Class Pre Kg to Class V) V Saanvika of UKG D bagged I prize – cash award of Rs.2100/-. K Kayal of PreKG A and Mahaswetha of IV E won II prize – cash award of Rs.1500/- Sahana of PreKG A, Shrinika of LKG E and A Lakshana of II D won the consolation prize with a cash award of Rs.1000/- each In the Senior category (Class VI to Class XII) S M Vedasree of X F bagged I prize – cash award of Rs.2100/-. Two children, S Yuvashri of VII E and A Sameena Begum of IX B won II prize- cash award of Rs.1500/- each Three students, K Sananda of VII D, T Koushiya of IX A and P K Varshini of VIII B won the consolation prize with a cash award of Rs.1000/- each The students were delighted as they had a chance to dance to the traditional beats of the music. They enjoyed doing the tough balancing act of keeping the Karagam over their heads and trying to dance. Complementary food stalls were set up and the students feasted on traditional food items such as Ven Pongal, Sweet Pongal, Sweet Poli, Medhu Vadai, Sambar, Sundal and Sugarcane Juice. The school resembled the setup of a “gramia” or “village-side” Pongal thiruvizha. SBSM’s exciting way of imparting traditional and cultural awareness amongst the students was appreciated all round by all the stake holders. The Pongal celebration concluded on an optimistic note of joy and hope.
